Gabion baskets are wire mesh baskets that are compactly
filled with rocks in order to form a stable block. Gabions can be manufactured
from either welded mesh or woven wire. Welded mesh gabions are generally more
popular as they are faster to erect than woven wire gabions and they don’t need
to be tensioned. This means that they will keep their shape despite any
pressure put on them.
Gabion baskets have many uses both commercially and in
domestic projects. Gabions are frequently used as retaining walls to help
stabilise earth movement and erosion, particularly where the land is sloped or
hilled, or where there is water, for example, at the side of a river, canal,
reservoir, or even as an eco-friendly solution for sea shore and beach
protection.
For these kind of projects, welded mesh gabions are likely
to be used as they are more likely to withhold the pressure that will be put on
them by any erosion or movement of the earth. Also, for a larger scale project,
the speedier erection of welded gabions is also a huge benefit when up against
time constraints.
Gabion baskets are also of great use in smaller scale
domestic projects. Welded mesh gabions are extremely useful in the garden for
jobs such as building small retaining walls to prevent slope erosion, or even
for landscaping; creating different levels in the garden for planting different
plants or shrubs. Gabions can even be used to make more scenic features in the
garden and can be planted on, or even used as steps, a garden wall or as a
seating area, with some stone slabs placed on top for comfort.
When using gabion baskets to create a garden feature, it is
possible to insert a partition into the gabion in order to fill the part that
is on show with expensive stones that are more aesthetically pleasing, whilst
the rest is filled with cheaper stone. It is often possible to purchased
bespoke welded mesh gabions for specific designs and purposes for residential
projects.
One of the major benefits of gabion baskets is that they can
usually be constructed by hand without expensive mechanical equipment, however,
many people choose to turn to experienced teams who are able to pack gabions
with an artistic ability that creates a more aesthetically pleasing solution.
